Poet and Filmmaker: Sarah Tremlett
The second edition of the ekphrastic poetry film competition – Frame to Frames : Your Eyes Follow (Cuadro a Cuadros : Tus Ojos Siguen) – was bilingual and also included an anthology of poems and a QR link to films. The painting Sarah Tremlett chose was Huapango Torero (2019) by Mexican non-binary artist Ana Segovia, which revises an original painting of a boy going into a bull’s field at night to practice bullfighting. In her painting, in a gesture against the cruel ‘entertainment’ the boy offers a flower to a bull. Bull / Toro with XaiLA aka Hatti Rees as a mime artist, depicts how man and bull are really similar, and when taunted will react, and finally lose their lives.

Sarah Tremlett expresses her love of her pet rabbit, and the sparrows she has encouraged to nest and breed (around 40 a year) in her tiny 30’ x 60’ rewilded garden. A personal approach to the need for bringing back natural habitats, for valuing animals and birds in our lives, at an emotional and domestic level, and highlighting the terrible consequences of devastation and loss if we don’t act now.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ju6zhR19IHc&t=40s
Director: Sarah Tremlett
Poet: Heidi Seaborn (US)
Poem: ‘Snapping a Selfie’
A commission by the Visible Poetry Project where the filmmaker could choose a poem to make a poetry film. A yearly project for poetry month in the USA. Tremlett chose Heidi Seaborn’s poem based on Marilyn Monroe, as her daughter Hatti could do a good impression of her. The poetry film shows Hatti as Marilyn trying to recite the poem. This happens three times with errors and once when she manages it. The fourth wall is broken as she looks down to check her lines. Hatti copies Marilyn’s voice and mannerisms and generates the same sense of pathos in the appropriation of a sexualised role or persona. At the beginning the speeded-up makeup routine is shown, and at the end the removing the makeup completes the picture.

Poet and Filmmaker: Sarah Tremlett
A concrete video poem with bands of colour, like a moving painting. A Formalist experiment as both a semi-lyric poem and graphic poetic screen. Here the text on screen echoes the voice but also depicts what is shown – for example, in relation to the mention of sun and water. It is about a resolve or absolute integrity that the truth, that is present through human awareness, can be found in all things.

Videopoet: Sarah Tremlett
An experimental videopoem, shot from a fixed camera over one year on a street corner in Bath. With slowed-down visuals and sound, and the image graphically enhanced and coloured, people move in and out of the frame, and their conversations are recorded and added out of sequence as text on screen or ‘found communal poem’.
At various points in the film it was frozen for a few seconds when tourists took pictures. These moments became 'postcards' of the site, with out-of-sequence conversations as the poetic description. Samples are shown above.

Horse-Woman
Basic Bruegel Editions, Canada, April, 2025. Horse-Woman is a poetic memoir about how the author finds herself working as a fashion model, whilst trying to write and paint, in bohemian late-1970s London bedsit land. As a socially and emotionally isolated child who hardly spoke, Sarah Tremlett was given a young horse to look after, which ultimately was sold against her wishes, due to studying for A-levels. In this account of events, in order to survive, Sarah’s autistic psyche creates a mythical, ‘otherkin’ horse persona which protects and interweaves with her experiences in the fashion world.

Director: Sarah Tremlett
Poet: Heidi Seaborn
Poem: ‘Snapping a Selfie’
Winner of Maldito Videopoetry Festival, Albacete, Spain, 2021
A commission by the Visible Poetry Project where the filmmaker could choose a poem to make a poetry film. A yearly project for poetry month in the USA. Tremlett chose Heidi Seaborn’s poem based on Marilyn Monroe, as her daughter Hatti could do a good impression of her. The poetry film shows Hatti as Marilyn trying to recite the poem. This happens three times with errors and once when she manages it. The fourth wall is broken as she looks down to check her lines. Hatti copies Marilyn’s voice and mannerisms and we feel the same sense of pathos in the appropriation of a sexualised role or persona. At the beginning the speeded-up makeup routine is shown, and at the end the removing the makeup completes the picture.
